In the traditions of most indigenous world cultures, rituals were performed to heal the body or spirit or to influence the natural world. Artistic and entertaining, these events often involved the entire community. Shakure Ensemble Ritual Theatre brings this ancient tradition to the theatre stage for the 21st century to enlighten, educate and entertain.
Intentional theater is a term coined by co-founder Blanche Blacke while innovating this new form to apear as guest artist with the MASS Ensemble in 1999.
SERT's intentional new works begin by invoking an intention for the piece and then inviting the spirit world to aid in its creation, using techniques similar to shamans in ancient times. Each piece focuses on a specific aspect, intended to shift consciousness, for individuals and/or current cultural issues. The "Ritual" in this context, embodies shamanic chant, energetic movement and music.
Video art. for symbolism and color, is added later. Theater vignette is then written, based on the myths and traditions of indigenous world cultures and included in each work to educate audiences, enhance expression and support the intention of the piece.
Guest artists from traditional cultures are often invited and their performance is presented and integrated into this multi-media tapestry, intact and true to their tradition. |
